Building a ukulele takes a great amount of time, skill, and effort, but the results are never guaranteed.
Starting with the best tonewoods is essential to achieving the best quality sound, look, and feel. The woods we offer are unique and hand-selected to combine the finest tonal qualities available, with stunning visual beauty.
Alaska Yellow Cedar, (AKA Alaska Cypress and Yellow Cypress), is very similar to Port Orford Cedar (Lawson Cypress) in many ways. It is very stable and stiff, has a soft velvety look and takes a beautiful finish. It is also one of the more resonant tonewoods, again similar to POC, but a bit warmer sound in the low end. We think you will enjoy this species.
Claro Walnut tonewood is a great option for Ukulele soundboard sets and necks. Rich warm sound, bold and clear, with superb harmonics best describe Walnuts’ tonal qualities. We air dry all of our stock to achieve the best colors, structural and tonal characteristics. Easily fashioned, Claro Walnut will yield visually stunning Ukuleles.
Ukes do it better with Pistachio...! The look and tone of a Pistachio ukulele will impress everybody in the room. The colors are a wild mix of purple, green, pink, white, black and brown, and we even offer grafted sets as all of our stock is salvaged from commercial nut groves. Most importantly, projection, sustain and tonal quality are all stellar.
This may be the most resonant tonewood we've found yet. By some studies, Western Redcedar is 6 times more resonant than Sitka Spruce. It is soft at 360 on the Janka scale, so some care is required in fabrication. The sound is very bright and crisp, and it seems to ring forever. We think you'll be delighted with the results.
Considered by many to be the King of tonewood, Redwood is incredibly resonant with awesome harmonic development, projection and sustain. All of our Redwood comes from salvaged bits of ancient 1000 to 2000+ year old trees and stumps abandoned in the forest a century ago. It can be a bit brittle, so a gentle touch is recommended. Redwood ukuleles have a truly magnificent sound.
Rapidly becoming one of the most sought after tonewoods available due to both physical and tonal properties. It is wonderful to work with, visually beautiful and the tone is very uniform thru the range of pitch(lacking dull or bright spots) with fabulous harmonic development, projection and sustain. Myrtlewood ukuleles sound amazing. Myrtlewood can be worked a bit thinner than most species for optimal resonance.
A rare, hard variety of Cypress, very light in weight with incredible strength. It fashions and fabricates with no issues and finishes with a glass like smoothness. It is ideal for tops, backs & sides, and necks. POC is also amazingly resonant with tonal qualities second to none. The sound is similar to Redwood, a bit less bright with full rich sound.
It was a real surprise to find that Douglas fir was actually four times as resonant as Sitka Spruce. The sound is warm, yet crisp and clear at the same time with excellent harmonic development. Curly Douglas fir is one of the rarest woods to be found and can be visually stunning. It's easy to work and will yield fantastic sounding ukuleles.
